Gum Laddoo

Women are more prone to iron deficiency anemia, specially during pregnancy and post delivery. At these crucial times they require more iron rich food. Here I share a very popular traditional recipe for the same in my region.

Ingredients required:
              Grated dry coconut-250gm
               Jaggery                  -250gm
               Edible gum            -100gm
               Almonds                -250gm
               Raisins                  -250gm                                                
               Dry dates              -250gm
               Cashew nuts          -250gm
               Marking nut seeds-250gm
               Garden cress seeds-A handful
                Poppy seeds           - A handful
                Ghee(Clarified butter) to fry

Cut almonds,dry dates,cashews,marking nut seeds into smaller pieces. Pound edible gum to smaller pieces.Then fry edible gum in ghee and keep aside.Then fry all the other ingredients(except jaggery) separately . Mix all these ingredients thoroughly.Add a very little bit of water to wet the jaggery and keep it on low flame to liquify. To this, add the mixture of ingredients and prepare laddoos when still warm. The mouth watering laddoos are ready to savour.

Jaggery, coconut, garden cress seeds, poppy seeds and all the dry fruits used are known sources of iron. So almost all the ingredients here are iron rich and each contribute to the daily recommended dosage of iron. One will definitely see a considerable increase in their haem content,  if they include these in their diet.

Methi Paratha

One of the richest sources of iron is Methi (Fenugreek). Here I share a very quick and simple recipe for the iron deficient.

1)Wash the Fenugreek leaves' bunch, then cut off the roots and keep aside in a colander to drain the water.

2)In a mixing bowl take a bowl full of whole wheat flour, to this add salt, red chilli powder or green chillies paste( as per your taste) and a pinch of carom seeds for flavor.

3)Chop a bowl full of washed Fenugreek leaves and add them to the mixing bowl containing the other ingredients and mix them well. Then knead the flour mixed with all the ingredients by slowly adding water to a consistency you are comfortable with to make Paratha.

4)Make small balls of the kneaded flour and roll them to make Paratha. Spread a few drops( about 4-5 drops)of oil on the Paratha before it's put on the hot griddle. Turn sides to cook it well.

5)Serve the  hot parathas with ghee and the cold ones with curds.

I am writing this review much later than the time I was supposed to do it. Though there were no deadlines for this by the author Mr. Bharat Krishna, I somewhere carry the guilt of being late and I  convince myself that it’s better to be late than never and proceed further. Not taking much time now I proceed straight to my review on the book.
 Red aka Jay narrates his story in a simple language which can be easily comprehended.
Jay is not so ambitious and lives in his own head. He sounds haphazard as he mentions proudly about his drinking, smoking and  ‘Marlboro lights’ in  order to create an impression of a style icon.
 He knows better English than many of  his classmates, he knows  national as well as international politics, reads people’s minds through their words and faces, has an x ray in his eyes  that scans the girls'  bodies through their outfit; what a versatile person!  And  the irony is that he himself doesn’t know what to do with his life. Not knowing clearly what he wants in his life he switches from one area of study to the other. And the one who hated the very idea of going to the US, lands up there for a second masters degree leaving his decent job.  And there, he finds it useless to study those subjects and takes an IT job which is nowhere connected to his bachelors degree in biology and masters in management. This is just to get out of the debts  he is in because of his study in US. He returns home with the idea of doing something for the country. God knows when he himself will know what that 'something' is clearly.  Hope the poor guy has taken the right decision at least this time.
So I recommend it for everybody.
Most of us are busy looking around rather than introspecting, and that can be related here.  As we go through his not so perfect story and make some opinions, it throws some light on our lives too like those transparent but yet a bit reflecting glasses, gradually.
The grammatical mistakes and  the very repetitive word ‘said’  which could have been replaced impressively by the other appropriate verbs don’t go unnoticed.The editing could have been still better.

Fit life

Living is an art. It doesn’t come easily to everyone. The mankind has been struggling since the very beginning. There were many enlightened who tried to teach the mankind how to live and few are still teaching us. Only a few are able to weave their lives beautifully while many others struggle hard to make anything out of it or even just live it, live it happily. We are burdened with the obligations which have come to us as a legacy and few which we have imposed on ourselves. Studying, scoring good marks, getting best job and possessing all the materialistic are some of the main ones to mention. ‘Are these all a must to live?’, my unhappy mind asks me many a times. Then says my inner voice, ‘Not necessarily. They are only required to make our lives better’. We make our lives bitter when we don’t get certain things we desire which we think are necessary to make life better. Life can still be good if not better . So happiness comes from within, from nowhere else. So though not easier I would try to be happy listening to that feeble inner voice that echoes those positive thoughts. Life is all about staying happy. It let’s us live life to the fullest which otherwise would be incomplete as we would take part in everything around passively . I believe, staying active is the other side of being happy. A depressed, unhappy mind would never be active. Sometimes unhappiness fills the belly and in some extreme divulgence is seen, either of which cut short the lifespan by making us weak devoid of nutrients or making us obese and unhealthy. Neither of these are good for the heart. So though not easier I would try to be happy always listening to that feeble inner voice. Though being happy, staying active and eating better are interrelated. This is only one side of the story. The happier me can’t eat however I want. I need to eat the right food in right proportions. I include green leafy vegetables and salads often in my lunch and dinner. But my taste buds crave for those fried snacks and very often I end up in the guilt pleasure of savoring them in large quantities to satiate myself. This is something inevitable, I can’t avoid the fried stuff completely. So I would switch to better oil like Saffolalife which is healthier for the heart. I am an active person but I have a very bad habit of going to bed late night and getting up late in the morning. On those days, when I get up earlier, I’m more fresh and active throughout. So now, I think I need to take this small step of inculcating this good habit.

Before It's Too Late......

Being in proper shape is almost everybody’s priority. If unhappy with ones looks, what not an individual does? If plump, one diets and sweats in the gym for hours and sometimes workouts for long hours in the gym and dieting are also unyielding. If lean, one relies on sprouts or protein drinks spending some extra bucks from the pockets for really a very long time. And still may not be happy if the individual is short as nothing can be done in this aspect; we all know linear growth stops after certain age. Having good looks has an impact on almost every person’s confidence level and hence his success in life. So is it not important to pay an attention to diet in the early days of ones life, the growing years?  I need not remind, it is the whole responsibility of parents to take care of the children from the very beginning of their life. It is their responsibility to see that they are gaining a healthy weight and growing taller with age.

It is not just about proper height and weight gain to look good and feel good, it is much more beyond that. It is living a healthy life ahead, with that healthy mind in the healthy body.  We always relate weight with fat and protein mass in the body but in growing years, a healthy weight gain is related to proper growth of the internal organs of the body by the pediatricians. All the internal organs need to grow into proper size for that proper functioning, contributing to healthy weight and height gain and hence required BMI (Body Mass Index).

Children, especially toddlers, are so much into their own world of playing
and exploring the new world around that they don’t even feel the hunger though their stomachs have emptied long back. The school going ones are so much tired with the activities in the schools that they are on bed as soon as they are back home. They hardly eat on time as we elders do. It is the most crucial time of growth for the children and I need not say, it is the most worrisome matter for the parents.

One runs so much around  children to feed them and still half of the food is left out on platter and the children remain deficient of the nutrition. And so growth rate is slower and the required growth may remain underachieved if care is not taken prior to its cessation. So what should one do to catch up with the lost growth? Very simple, add some extra nutrition to the food so that the nutrition deficiency gets compensated. The quantity need not be more if the quality of the food is great. “It is never too late,”  they say, but that is right only on certain contexts, not  always. Isn’t it? A parent should start taking the right measures before the time( growing period)is completely gone. A healthy drink in the morning and in the evening can do enough benefit to the growing children. Datsun Redi Go-My Car

I always wanted to own a small car, I mean not a long one, compact from outside and yet spacious inside, which made people on roads turn their heads with its best looks. But it doesn’t mean a compromise on the performance of the car. A good mileage is mandatory, in fact one of the top requirements. I know it is the top priority of many too. Well, who doesn’t want in these times of inflation when every now and then there are hikes in prices of petrol and diesel?

Whenever outside, I always looked at those good looking cars with awe and noted down the brand, model names. As soon as I came home, I always checked the other details like mileage, price, interiors etc. Those car ads on TV always brought me to the hall no matter whether I was busy in kitchen, in the back yard or garden. Such is my craze for the cars. But not to forget, I don’t like to spend lavishly even on cars with all the desirable features. Owning a car isn’t everything in life for the middle class, there are many important things in life to be considered, especially in these inflation affected times. Isn’t it? Is it possible to have one with good looks and performance at a lower price? No, not possible; if you are thinking so, then you are wrong. It wasn’t possible until now. Now, with the new Datsun ready Go my search for a best car suitable for me ends. If the priorities I mentioned are yours too, then your search ends too.

It has many admirable features along with great looks. Be it the Yukan Design or the D-Cut Gruille with honey comb pattern with the ‘ Datsun’ badge in the center, all make it more attractive. The ‘Yukan’ design is the first thing thing that I liked about this car. This compact car has still more to offer, high stance allows one inside the car to enjoy a wider view of the roads and surroundings. Its efficient performance with 25.17kmpl and smaller turning radius, make one go around with it swiftly. Smaller turning radius definitely makes it more convenient and for me that would be fun making faster turns, which otherwise are more time consuming and boring. So mileage and the smaller turning radius are the second and third things which make me go for it. These are just a few to mention while the car offers much more at a lower price. Isn’t this exciting? One definitely falls in love with it at the very moment of a first look at it. One shouldn’t be late in checking with the nearby distributors as it is to be launched on June 7th. So if you want to have it before anyone in the town and show it off all around, hurry up.

Did You Know Drug Addicts Who Don't Find Painkillers Turn To Anti-Diarrhea Drugs?

Addictions not only have harmful effects on a person’s health and life but also affect the people living around. They completely take over a man, especially drug addiction, making him live a worthless life.  Despite every effort by an individual to quit addiction, it often relapses because of the structural and functional changes that have taken place in the person’s brain. Government has implied a ban on issuing the Opioids at a store without a prescription, any such acts would make legal cases on the particular drug store and the addict involved.
Did you know addicts who don’t find pain killers turn to anti diarrhoea drugs?
Deaths of a few persons with the history of drug addiction in the United States recently  has disclosed the fact that addicts are turning to anti diarrhoea drugs like Loperamide. A 39 year old with a history of drug addiction collapsed at home and was declared dead at the hospital due to severe cardiac arrest. And the autopsy showed very high doses of Loperamide in the tissues.

Loperamide is also an Opioid like Heroin and Morphine which acts on Opioid receptors in the gut. It has a hard time crossing the blood brain barrier. It is   used to treat diarrhoea in lower doses. In higher doses it acts like Heroin and Morphine on the CNS causing high.
It is cheap and requires no prescription and so it is easily accessible at the drug store with no legal issues. For these reasons few addicts are turning to anti diarrhoea drugs like Loperamide to abuse. While few others who are trying to overcome addiction are self treating with Loperamide to face the withdrawal symptoms like muscle pain, vomiting, diarrhoea.  Drug addiction is something very hard to quit. And few are turning to the anti diarrhoea drugs to quit addiction to Heroin and Morphine without the knowledge of its ill effects on the body.

In higher doses Loperamide not only causes severe constipation but also has lethal effects on heart making the heart beat irregular.  So it is very necessary to take a doctor’s advice instead of self-treating or taking any medicines for any addiction or disease.

Despite strong will, it is very hard to quit drug addiction without the help of a doctor because of the changes that have already taken place in the body. So I can say, in order not to fall into such practices which later become addictions, one should try to live a happy contented life with good practices like Yoga, which not only heal the body but also the soul. ‘A healthy mind is in a healthy body’ isn’t it? I can say Yoga is very much advised by the doctor’s too these days, for total health care.  Modern medicines along with traditional healthy practices off course help one to come out of bad habits or addictions faster and easily.

Pasta Indiana

I tried to make a completely different pasta which I named, 'Pasta Indiana'. It sure was fun and I loved the taste too.

                                 Here is the image of Dell Monte pasta which I received.

I followed few simple steps to prepare the pasta according to my taste.
First I heated some oil and added some mustard and cumin seeds. After they spluttered, I added some roasted groundnuts, about 4 roughly smashed garlic cloves and one medium sized chopped onion.

Then added some jaggery, about the size of three big areca nuts.

I added the tamarind syrup I had prepared by soaking it in water for half an hour.

To this I added pasta which I had boiled, drained and kept aside. 

And then went in a three fourth tea spoon of red chilli powder, a pinch of coriander powder, a pinch of cumin powder and chat masala. After mixing all I let it on flame for about minutes with the vessel covered with lid.

Then after transferring it to the serving bowl I topped it with 3 table spoons of curds and mixed it well. 

And then simply garnished it with little more curds and kept some onions and garlic around it

Every creation by NATURE, be it the animal, bird, forest, mountain or the river, has the right to live in its true pure form; but we, the so called most intelligent living beings are destroying or spoiling them for our benefits. I question,'Can't we live in harmony with them?' Then, comes...'The Darwin's Theory Of Survival Of The Fittest' to mind, one has to fight to survive! But fighting doesn't mean killing, at least now, when science has come this far. Being smarter ones, we can avoid causing any harm to them and still survive! Isn't that something to be thought over? And, again, for that balanced ecosystem all have to survive for the sake of all.

I want to save all the species on the planet but since it's a Hobson's choice, I have to choose these... my favorites. Favoritism prevails everywhere, I hope my other fellow beings on the list don't mind for not being chosen.

FROGS...? They sounded very interesting since my childhood. We sisters used to sit by the pond in our farm and watch the tadpoles make tiny hops and merry. The way they swam was truly delightful for us. So, for this reason, the unhappy me who doesn't see a frog around these days,
want to save them and their relatives, I mean the other species of frogs from all over the world.

The next ones are our relatives of past, Monkeys...! I heard stories about these naughty creatures snatching bananas, coconuts and even purses from people. Once they had taken an entry into my house through the back door while I was fast asleep on one afternoon. I woke up to see a family of monkeys-2 adults and two babies entering into my kitchen in a queue quietly. Petrified me, ran to the neighbors to get help and by the time I returned with my neighbor they were on their way back with the head of the family carrying my box full of flattened rice. Somehow my neighbor managed to take my box back! They had eaten my onions, potatoes and carried some sweet lemons that I had kept on the cooking platform. Yeah! They messed up my kitchen and ate my food and I still want to save them and their other relatives! Generous, me.

Elephants? I always knew as them as humble and friendly creatures. The movie buff me, saw them in every other movie as a pet and admired them a lot and....the story still continues. So, I want to save these, my all-time favorites.

Honey Diet

Human body is made up of carbohydrates, proteins, lipids along with traces of vitamins-A, B Complex, C, D, E, K and minerals-Iron, calcium, sodium, potassium, magnesium etc.  Any deficiencies in these cause various disorders in the human physiology and anatomy.

-Deficiency of 'Vitamin A' causes night blindness.
-Deficiency of 'Vitamin B 12' causes pernicious anemia.
-Deficiency of 'Vitamin C' causes scurvy.
-Deficiency of 'Vitamin D' causes rickets.
-Deficiency of 'Iron' causes anemia.
-Deficiency of 'Calcium' leads to osteoporosis.
 Severe deficiencies can be fatal.

Certain fruits, vegetables and pulses contain certain nutrients, for example: pulses are rich sources of proteins; apple, tomato, carrot, papaya are all rich in Vitamin A; gooseberry, citrus fruits-lemon, orange, sweet lime are rich sources of Vitamins C. So milk and egg are considered wholesome food as they are rich sources of many nutrients like proteins, calcium and vitamins.

Excess amounts of these essential components cause problems too....hypervitaminosis, hypercalcemia etc. leading to further complications in the human body.

So one is required to take these supplements regularly in required amounts, neither less nor more.
The benefits of such a balanced diet cannot be numbered as they are plenty. Along with that healthy body with normal functioning organs comes the healthy mind. With these two one can achieve success in every sphere of life. Isn't that true?

I know many, who in the quest of losing weight got hospitalized due to weakness and anemia. Crash diets only further the complications. To burn the excess fat one is not supposed to cut on all the other essential nutrients. Avoiding fried items and all the other fatty foods is what all required to get into shape. One is advised to have many small meals a day rather than 3 full heavy meals- breakfast, lunch and dinner. The food intake must be mainly in liquid form-juices, and green leafy vegetables. Completely lessening the sweets intake can only cause weakness as they are primary sources of energy. So replacing the natural sugar with artificial sweeteners which have low calories is always advised. But, that replacement with honey is more beneficial as it is also a rich source of antioxidants which help in eliminating the free radicals from the body, the bi-products of metabolism, which cause ageing and other diseases.

Intake of a spoonful of honey with a warm glass of water and lemon juice is a known fact aiding in weight reduction. Not only this, adding honey in place of sugar to sweets, juices and other dishes, which is no cutting down on the sugar intake,  called 'Honey diet' is very healthy way of dieting.
